Records are made to be broken, and as they get harder to beat, there is always some determined person out there up for the challenge. The latest victim of this determination is Barry Denson but first let’s take a look at whose footsteps he is attempting to walk in.
In 2009, Paul Zimbler set the new heads-up poker world record by playing for 78 hours, 25 minutes, and 45 seconds straight against 183 opponents and raising £35,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation in the process.
A year later, Phil Laak sat down in the Bellagio poker room and proceeded to set a new record by enduring 115 hours straight of play, setting the Guinness World Record for the longest continuous poker session on the felt and raising money for Camp Sunshine. He finished with a $6,766 profit.
Now it’s up to UK poker events organiser Barry Denson who is attempting to beat Laak’s outstanding record when he hits the felt at the G Casino in Manchester on Jul. 1. Whatever money raised will go towards the Help For Heroes charity, which provides support for servicemen and women wounded in the line of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. The record-maker wannabe has taken to Twitter to express his thoughts about his forthcoming attempt. “In 1894 Russian physician Marie de Manaceine kept four puppies awake almost five days, at which point the puppies died,” he wrote. And, “What songs would you suggest for my MP3 player to help keep me awake for 115 hours?” On Jan. 20 Denson tweeted, “Come to ‘115 Hour Poker Marathon World Record Attempt’ 1 July at 00:00 until 6 July at 00:00.”
